CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Scarlet lounged on the bed while Carter typed furiously on his laptop. They’d dried off and changed about an hour ago. Carter had seemed reserved and off-balance, quickly declaring that he would draft his resignation letter for the next few hours. Scarlet him go in peace and decided to roam the park next to the hotel. She got some pretty good shots of the water, the children at play, and the brightly painted swing sets. It had been a good day in a string of bad ones. She was glad now to be able to stretch across the mattress and linger in that place between consciousness and sleep.

THAT’S WHY I WILL TENDER IN MY RESIGNATON…

She heard his words as loudly as if he’d spoken into her ears. His voice soothed her, adding to the peaceful spell this beautiful country had woven over her heart.

Still…

There was something about this ability that she didn’t understand. Carter had explained how Scarlet’s brain-electricity thing worked, but why did Carter hear her thoughts? As far as she knew, he couldn’t hear anyone else’s. And why did it only work when they touched… except for the times when they heard each other’s thoughts randomly?

The questions circled her head like a swarm of mosquitoes disturbing her calm, and she sat up to swat them away.

“Carter,”

“Hm,” He muttered, his concentration on the screen.

“Come here, please. I want to try something.”

Not even bothering to turn around, Carter nodded, “Okay.”

He continued tapping on his keyboard and Scarlet narrowed her eyes. Biting her tongue to keep from nagging him, she played on his phone until he sent the email and yawned, tiredly rubbing at his eyes.

“What did you want to talk about?” Carter asked, swinging the swivel chair around so that he faced her.

“It’s not so much what I want to say, as much as something that I want to do.”

He glanced suspiciously at her.

“Get your mind out of the gutter, Mathews. I want to see if we can communicate. You know, telepathically.”

He blinked. “That’s impossible.”

“Yeah, so is shooting electricity out of your eyes, so is hearing the random thoughts of random people, so is walking around in someone else’s memories.”

Scarlet smiled smugly. She knew he had no comeback.

Carter folded his arms and shrugged. “Okay. What do you want us to do?”

“I’ve been hearing some of your thoughts.” She began.

His eyes bugged and he leaned away from her. “What exactly did you hear?” He asked, with a note of accusation in his voice.

“Nothing bad.” She calmed him down.

“I don’t like the thought of you in my… thoughts.” He finished glaring at her.

“It happened by accident. I promise. The point is, I’d like to test it out, maybe see if we could communicate at will, without touch and with a little more consistency.”

“Well, what do you suggest?” Carter relaxed his posture, seeming more into the idea than before.

“I have no idea. You’re the doctor.”

“I’m not even close to a neurologist. I specialized in General Medicine.”

“Meaning?” Scarlet prompted.

“Meaning, when it comes to the brain, I’m as ignorant as the next guy.
